For one night this season, Springport Motor Speedway will be called by its original name, "Michigan Ideal Speedway". It's "Russ Densmore Night" on June 2nd as we honor the man who built the speedway.
Russ has found about 200 of his very first lucky number programs still in the boxes they were shipped in from the printing shop. These will be distributed on this night and Russ will be autographing them on the start/finish line during intermission.
We have cleared out the souvenir stand and are putting all of Russ's old photo albums, plaques, awards, etc in there on display.
Russ has been contacting as many of his old track sponsors in the hopes that they will come for this evening. He would also like see all of his former track workers, racers, crewmembers, and anyone who helped him build the speedway. He'd like everyone to show up and see him again.
Also on this night, the Track Time Driving School is bringing two NASCAR Nextel Cup cars. One will be on display behind the main grandstand along with their brand new concession trailer. The other car will be unloaded in the pit area. They are changing the gears in that car to be able to run it on the 3/8ths mile oval. It has a second seat and will be giving rides during the night. Also, one lucky person who attends the races on this night will win a ride on the 2-mile oval at Michigan International Speedway.
The rained out "Fallen Heroes 500" is rescheduled for June 2nd. It's a race between 6 active duty armed forces service men in honor of our local fallen heroes who have died in Iraq. We'll have a special color guard ceremony and fly over.
The racing program will include the MCR Dwarfs, Pony Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Sportsmans.
It's going to be a busy night at Michigan Ideal Speedway this coming Saturday.
